Antarctic ascidians: an isolated and homogeneous faunapor_110

چکیده
Several biogeographical studies have already been performed on the ascidians of the Antarctic region. However, new data obtained in the last few years have led us to a revision of the biogeography of this fauna. To examine the biogeographical structure of the Antarctic region, we divided it into 10 sectors, depending on the principal geographical features, and then applied cluster analysis and a multi-dimensional scaling ordination to a presence/absence matrix of species for each biogeographical area. Our study shows that Antarctic ascidians are a very homogeneous fauna, with a high level of endemism in the whole region (25–51% of Antarctic endemic species per sector), but with a low percentage of sector endemism (only up to 10%). This probably results from isolation arising from the Antarctic Convergence, and the vast geographical distances from adjacent regions, as well as from the relative constancy of the hydrographical conditions and the dispersal of organisms through circumpolar currents. In fact, cosmopolitan species represented only 0–7% of the total ascidian fauna in all sectors. Only the Bellingshausen Sea (low sample size), Bouvetøya (young and isolated, with an impoverished ascidian fauna) and the South Sandwich Islands (also young and isolated) are relatively separated. The insular sectors were more closely related to the South America and subAntarctic regions than the continental ones, showing a latitudinal gradient.

Natural Products from Antarctic Colonial Ascidians of the Genera Aplidium and Synoicum: Variability and Defensive Role
Ascidians have developed multiple defensive strategies mostly related to physical, nutritional or chemical properties of the tunic. One of such is chemical defense based on secondary metabolites. We analyzed a series of colonial Antarctic ascidians from deep-water collections belonging to the genera Aplidium and Synoicum to evaluate the incidence of organic deterrents and their variability. The...
متن کاملRecovery in Antarctic benthos after iceberg disturbance: trends in benthic composition, abundance and growth forms
The response of an Antarctic benthic community to iceberg disturbance was investigated using underwater photographs (1 m2 each) on the SE Weddell Sea shelf. This study: (1) characterises composition, coverage, number of patches and area of sessile benthic fauna, (2) describes faunal heterogeneity using MDS ordination and identifies ‘structural taxa’ of each recovery stage, and (3) analyses chan...

Retention efficiencies and pumping rates of the four Antarctic ascidian species Ascidia challengeri, Cnemidocarpa verrucosa, Corella eumyota and Molgula pedunculata from Potter Cove, King George Island, were measured. None of the species reached a 100% retention efficiency at any given particle size. Pumping rates of the four species range between 250 and 349 ml /h per gram of ash free dry mass...
متن کاملIdentification of Ascidians (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) around Larak Island in the Persian Gulf
Despite the variety of marine organisms recorded from the Persian Gulf, acidians located along the Persian Gulf have not received much attention. We collected Ascidian samples from four sites along Larak Island (Persian Gulf) using Scuba diving and snorkeling at a depth that ranged from 5-15 m. Taxonomic identification was carried out by authoritative keys and texts. We found 4 species that be...
متن کاملBenthic colonization in newly ice-free soft-bottom areas in an Antarctic fjord
Extended glacier retreat is among the main consequences of the rapid warming of the West Antarctic Peninsula. Particularly, in the inner part of Potter Cove (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) large areas are now exposed to open sea conditions owing to the retreat of Fourcade glacier. During the 2010 austral summer, underwater photographic surveys were undertaken by SCUBA diving up to 30 m in ...
